FAQs

What is self-directed education?

Self-directed education means children take the lead in their own learning. Instead of adults deciding what, when, and how a child should learn, we create a safe, stimulating environment and trust each child’s natural curiosity to guide the way. As facilitators, we observe, listen, and offer support, while honouring each child’s unique timing, interests, and ways of engaging with the world. We are proud members of the Alliance for Self-Directed Education.

Do you teach academics?

We offer academics in an organic, child-led way. Rather than using standardized curricula or requiring worksheets and tests, we integrate reading, writing, math, science, and other academic concepts into real-life experiences. When children are motivated by genuine interest, academic learning becomes meaningful and lasting.

Are there any assessments, testing or report cards?

We do not use standardized tests. Instead, we observe each child’s development, focusing on the whole child: social, emotional, physical, and intellectual growth. Progress is shared with families through regular conversations, and snapshots of our daily learning experiences are shared on our class blog to keep you connected to your child’s journey.

How many children will be in my child's class?

We have a maximum of 12 children in the program at any one time. We offer a mixed-age environment where children of different ages learn and play together as one community. We believe mixed-age groups foster natural mentorship, collaboration, and empathy. Younger children learn by observing and interacting with older peers, while older children develop confidence, leadership, and a deeper understanding as they guide and support those younger than them. This kind of environment mirrors how children have learned for most of human history through play, exploration, and connection across ages.

Is your program only for homeschooling families?

No. While our model is similar to homeschooling in its flexibility and child-led approach, we welcome all families seeking an alternative to traditional schooling. Whether you are a homeschooler, an unschooler, or simply looking for a more nurturing, freedom-based educational setting, our program is open to you.

Will my child be learning survival skills?

No, this is not a survival based forest school.

What does my child need to bring?

  • A backpack with a change of clothes (weather-appropriate)

  • A water bottle

  • Nutritious snacks and lunch

  • Weather-appropriate outerwear (we are outside in all conditions!)

  • Indoor slippers or cozy shoes (optional but encouraged)

  • Anything special your child wants to share or explore
