You Won't Find This in a Textbook

This Month in the Forest...
Science is woven so naturally into our days at Cedarwood that it often goes unnoticed as “science” at all. Science, at its core, is curiosity. It is asking questions, making observations, testing ideas, noticing patterns, wondering why, and trying again.
As Richard Louv writes in Last Child in the Woods,
“Passion is lifted from the earth itself by the muddy hands of the young.”
Science becomes meaningful to children, not as a subject to study, but as a living experience they are part of.
This week’s rain offered the perfect invitation for exploration. The damp forest floor was alive with worms and tiny creatures emerging from beneath the leaves and soil.
The brook was gushing with water this week, transforming into a lively place for discovery. Children noticed countless tiny creatures moving through the current and carefully collected a few in specimen jars for closer observation before gently returning them back to the water.
The forest constantly invites children into this kind of learning. Bird calls spark questions about who is nearby. Changing weather leads to observations about the seasons. Mud, water, ice, sticks, animal tracks, insects, and plants all become opportunities for experimentation and discovery. Science becomes hands-on, meaningful, and connected to real life because it is real life.
No classroom lesson can truly replace the depth of learning that happens when children are immersed in the natural world itself. In nature, science is not separated into units or subjects, it is everywhere.
ENROLLMENT
We are excited to share that Fall Enrollment for the 2026/2027 Cedarwood season is open! We are currently scheduling tours and welcoming families to come explore our space and learn more about our program.
This coming year, Cedarwood will be offering a new seasonal enrollment structure designed to provide both continuity and flexibility for families.
Rather than enrolling for the full year all at once, families will now register one season at a time:
- Fall Session – 12 weeks
- Winter Session – 12 weeks
- Spring Session – 12 weeks
These sessions are designed to flow seamlessly back-to-back for families who would like the same steady rhythm and continuity we have offered this past year. At the same time, the seasonal structure allows greater flexibility for families whose schedules or needs may change throughout the year.
Enrollment is currently open for:
- Mondays
- Tuesdays
- Wednesdays
Availability is limited on each day, and we currently have only 1 spot remaining on Tuesdays.
If you would like to schedule a tour, ask questions, or learn more about the upcoming season, simply reply to this email, we would love to connect with you.
Cedarwood Literacy Enrichment:
This summer, Cedarwood Enrichment will be offering a small-group Novel Study inspired by My Side of the Mountain by Jean Craighead George for children ages 8–12.
Through shared reading, thoughtful discussion, nature exploration, and creative journaling, we’ll spend six weeks building meaningful connections with literature, nature, and one another — while continuing to nurture a love of reading throughout the summer months.
Alongside the rich imaginative experience of the novel itself, children will naturally strengthen important literacy skills including:
- vocabulary development
- comprehension and narration
- spelling and sentence structure
- written expression and journaling
- identifying elements of a novel such as character, setting, plot, and theme
- discussion and critical thinking skills
Program Details:
- Wednesdays, July 8th - August 12th
- 3:30 - 5:30
- Maximum of 6 children
- $240
Enrichment is facilitated by Brigitte, co-founder of Cedarwood and former elementary school teacher (B. Ed, M. Ed.)
